SPPP JUNE 6, 2011 REGULAR MONTHLY MEETING - F5 STUDIO

Another exhilarating and blistering jampacked evening we had in F5 studio last night as we again gathered with excitement and harmony while everyone clicks their shutters excitedly composing their shots from different angles, lenses pointed to our beautiful female nude model whose naked body was transformed to a fairy-like sexy creature done by our invited Hair and Make-up artists - Sher Pua and Kathleen Chavez who both did the airbrush body painting while Anna Knicolai did the traditional hand body painting. Thank you guys! And a very special thanks to our beautiful model Maki!

Nelson Salting from Mayon Photographers Club, Inc. who came all the way from Bicol with our member Dr. Greg Tan, announced and gave some detail plans of the SPICY ALBAY 3 which will be another joint venture project of SPPP and MPCI that will be held sometime on October this year.

Congratulations to the top 3 winners of Avant Garde photo contest: 1ST PLACE - Sonny Kabigting, 2ND PLACE - Orly Mercado, and 3RD PLACE JOEY TARIGA. We would like to thank our panel of judges: Manny Inumerable, Tony Alunan, and Joey Contreras. We would also like to welcome our newest regular member - Dr. Lillian Ebuen who passed the final test and requirement of SPPP when she presented the portraits of 3 regular members last April. Finally, she is now a bonafide regular member of SPPP. Congratulations Dr. Lillian Ebuen! Thanks for bringing the birthday cake of Nancy Lim and to your very delicious pulutang kilawing kambing.

As SPPP tradition, we had a group pictorial with our lone birthday celebrant - Nancy Lim while singing our unique SPPP birthday song. Thank you Nancy for your efforts and support to our club. SPPP’s March Meeting and Photo Shoot

The Society of Portrait Photographers’ meeting last March 14, 2011 was an eventful one. There were lots of alcohol and fats consumed, there was talk of nudity, and there was also some spray paint, and uncensored swearing involved.

Early on, everyone feasted on beer and lechon, courtesy of birthday celebrants Boy Samson, Stan Abainza, and Lito Remulla. What better way to start the night, than on a healthy note, right? Most people were still high from the recently concluded ‘Naic Photo Escapade’, and some participants came armed with their photo contest entries.

Richel Mascariñas, Mon Ching, and Charming Baldemor served as judges. Winners were recognized in three categories: Bodyscape/Nude, Glamour, and Bridal. Congratulations to Ed Banaga and Nancy Lim (tie), Ferdie Flores, and SPPP President Orly Mercado for leading the roster at 1st place for each category respectively.

Of course everyone also came that night in full anticipation of the photo shoot. This time, SPPP’s Jeng Flores came with trusty hair stylist Martini. Together they transformed beautiful Perch Dianne, into a bizarrely stunning model, just perfect for this month’s Avant Garde theme.

But let’s go to the swearing, shall we? More congratulations are in order as Nancy Lim and Lito Remulla, transitioned from being probationary members to bona fide regular ones. They swore their oath and were presented their SPPP Certificate of Membership. Ed Banaga and Dr. Lillian Ebuen also presented their photo entries as a requirement in becoming regular members. We look forward to having them, and more probationary members join the line-up of regular SPPP members in the near future.

Lights, Camera… Shoot!

Road trip to a beautiful secluded farm, four gorgeous models, and many talented photographers. These are the main ingredients to the successful, fun-filled Naic Photo Escapade organized by one of the premier photography clubs in the country, the Society of Portrait Photographers of the Philippines (SPPP). Joined by several eager participants, SPPP headed to Lopez Farm in Naic, Cavite, on March 5, 2011. It was just a 1-hour drive from Manila, but seeing the vast expanse of lush green fields, and the relaxing nipa huts in the farm was a welcome delight after the group’s journey.

SPPP is composed of photographers of all shapes and sizes, from all walks of life. They are fortunate to have among them, one of the most sought after make-up artists in the country, Jennifer Flores, who is also the better half of SPPP Vice President Ferdie Flores. Jeng, as Ms. Flores is fondly called, wasted no time and started working on the models while President Orly Mercado delivered a quick orientation of the day’s proceedings. Ibarra Deri, who is one of the founding members of SPPP, gave some tips on using different camera settings and taking effective photos. After this, everyone was divided into four groups.

Never mind the rain, things started to sizzle as the photo shoot kicked off with the sexy models wearing their swimsuits. The much-awaited and always challenging Nude/Bodyscape Photography came next. The models were all very professional, not to mention patient, complying with the photographers’ various requests and instructions, while having to put up with the rain, and on some instances, uninvited six-legged visitors.

There was still much to be done, so after a hearty lunch facilitated by SPPP probationary member James Dy, the groups got the ball rolling again with Glamour, followed by Bridal Photography. The participants had a grand time capturing photos of the girls in stunning dresses and gowns designed by Jazel Sy. As darkness started to fall, everyone had dinner while Ferdie Flores gave a mini lecture on Wedding Photography. He showed an audio-visual presentation of some of his best wedding shots, including the photos of the newly-wed daughter of Ibarra Deri, Dail. As the night wore on, exciting raffle prizes were given away. Everyone was also given a surprise treat, as another SPPP founding member and magician extraordinaire Boy Samson showcased his magical prowess, leaving the participants baffled and very much entertained after a tiring day.

SPPP holds monthly competitions, and the winners for last month’s contest were awarded that night, led by Sonny Kabigting (1^st place) and Ed Banaga (2^nd and 3^rd place). This photo shoot is no different, as participants will also compete in the three categories: Bodyscape, Glamour, and Bridal. Photo entries will be judged during the club’s next meeting. For shutterbugs who are interested in joining SPPP, they meet every first Monday of the month, at F5 Studio in Mandaluyong City.

SPPP’s February Meeting and Bodyscape Photo Shoot

The love month brings us much to celebrate as familiar faces meet new ones at the Society of Portrait Photographers’ (SPPP) monthly meeting last Monday, February 7, 2011, at the F5 Photo Studio in Mandaluyong City. The venue was almost overflowing with people. Nothing like a nude/bodyscape photo shoot organized by one of the premier photography clubs in the country to bring together photo enthusiasts of various ages, from all walks of life.

The club was fortunate have ABS-CBN talent Catherine De Goma as the lone model for this month’s photo shoot. This petite yet alluring mom-to-be just wrapped up her stint as a mermaid on a popular TV series (the theme song of which was also recorded by her), and is about to go back to being a chef. SPPP member and make-up artist extraordinaire Jeng Flores busied herself enhancing Catherine’s beautiful face while President Orly Mercado and Adviser Boy Samson presided over the meeting.

There were a few new probationary members, and some who were interested in joining the group, so they were given a brief overview of what the society is all about. To demonstrate one of the requirements in becoming a regular member of SPPP, probationary members Lito Remulla and Nancy Lim presented their photo entries to the group, explaining their respective concepts and lighting techniques. These photos will be subject to the review and approval of the officers, and we will learn next month if Lito and Nancy will be welcomed in the roster of SPPP’s regular members.

After a delicious dinner of Chicken Inasal and overflowing rice, we were divided into four groups to facilitate a well-organized pictorial. Vice President Ferdie Flores and Secretary PJ Villegas first shared a few pointers with everyone before the pictorial went underway. Meanwhile, distinguished guests Roger Tingle and Yugel Losorata judged this month’s contest, and critiqued the FHM-inspired photo entries. Congratulations to Sonny Kabigting, who got 3rd place, and Orly Mercado, who bagged both 2nd and 1st place.

It was nice to see Charming Baldemor at Rogel Masiclat back, as SPPP also welcomes Dr. Gregorio Tan, Chris Jovellanos, and James Dy to the society. We would also like to thank Mharu Talicuran, Ralph Gulapa, Michael Domingo, Arnold Allangui, James Choa and Roberto Barredo, for gracing the occasion and expressing interest in joining the SPPP as well. We hope to see you again next month.

SPPP’s January Meeting and Photo Shoot

It’s a whole new year, and the Society of Portrait Photographers of the Philippines (SPPP) kicks off the decade with their regular monthly meeting on January 10, 2011, at a new venue. The F5 Photo Studio in Mandaluyong has a cozy feel to it, but also has a very spacious studio area and a separate dressing and make-up rooms, perfect for photo shoots. There was some challenge in locating the studio, but the group had a good time waiting for the others while chatting and indulging in snacks and drinks courtesy of Dr. Joey Tariga.

Soon, President Orly Mercado called the meeting to order and we started out with SPPP pioneers Boy Samson and Ibarra Deri imparting some inspiring words to the group, giving them some tips in honing their skills, and even taking them on a mini tour back into the world of film photography. Mr. Deri also talked about the much anticipated Photo Caravan set for mid-2011, getting everyone excited, short of packing their bags. There was more good news as it was announced that one of SPPP’s probationary members, Dr. Tariga, opened his own photo studio in Greenhills, with another probationary member and fellow veterinarian, Dr. Sharon Ga as one of his business partners.

After dinner, we were divided into small groups for the FHM-inspired photo shoot, and everyone started conceptualizing while the studio was being prepped. Models Lynyl Tenedero and Regine Defante were made up beautifully, as always, by SPPP’s very own Jeng Flores. Lyn and Regine were very professional, and gamely posed according to our various concepts. After the group sessions, members went into the studio individually to shoot for their contest entries for next month.

Time really does fly when you’re having fun. The night wore out quickly, and it was time for the January birthday celebrants Dr. Tariga, Marc Manzano, and Ferdie Flores to blow out their birthday candles. SPPP would like to thank Manny Inumerable for welcoming the club to his studio.

SPPP’s Christmas Party 2010

Good food, fun games, exciting prizes, gifts, plaques, music, laughter, and magic. That pretty much sums up the evening of December 6, 2010, as the Society of Portrait Photographers of the Philippines (SPPP) held their Christmas party at the Rotary Center in Quezon City. The night kicked off with the early birds enjoying balut courtesy of PJ Villegas, and a little magic lesson from club adviser Boy Samson.

There were a lot of prizes to be given away, so right after everyone feasted on more food, including the delicious lechon courtesy of Leo Cordova, John Purunganan, and Lito Remulla, the party hosts and game masters headed by President Orly Mercado, wasted no time in getting the ball rolling. People teamed up in pairs to participate in ‘Pinoy Henyo’. All the words were related to photography and SPPP, but oddly enough, only two teams got it right. The fastest tandem, Stan Abainza and Sonny Kabigting, hit the jackpot in less than a minute. Could it be because they ate the most balut? No, that can’t be it. Could it be because their word was ‘Photoshop’, and it’s all the rage in this digital era? Yes. Maybe.

More prizes were given away during other games like ‘Bring Me’ and ‘Memory’. There were so many raffle prizes, we felt like we were playing ‘Bingo’ with our raffles stubs laid out in front of us. Little handy gadgets, notebooks from Dr. Joey Tariga, SPPP shirts from Noel San Andres, photo albums by Albums & Company, major prizes from Aperture Trading and Abacus Microcomputer, a magic stone courtesy of Boy Samson, even free prophylaxis sessions from Dr. Lillian Ebuen and Dr. Alex Nadela. Jeng Flores bagged the grand prize: an HD Media Player.

It was also a night of recognition and awards. Frank Tsai, Handy To, and Ariel Samaniego were given plaques of appreciation for their continuous support to the club. Founding members Boy Samson and Ibarra Deri were presented with recognition awards. Tony Abad got 1st prize for Photo of the Year, while Orly Mercado and Ferdie Flores bagged 2nd and 1st runner up honors respectively. Of course, an SPPP awarding ceremony wouldn’t be complete without recognizing the year’s top photographers. They were lead by Orly Mercado, who was named Photographer of the Year, and Leo Cordova and Lito Remulla with the 2nd and 3rd honors. Mr. Cordova was given the Rookie of the Year award. The lone birthday celebrant, Ed Enriquez, was also rendered the most popular song in the world, SPPP style.

The exchange gift would be more aptly called ‘Pick Your Gift If You’re Not Yet Too Dizzy To Do It’. Gifts were passed around in a process I can’t even begin to describe. I do remember a P500 bill being targeted by most people though.

We started the festivities with magic, and what better way to end the night than with even more magic? Our friends from Magicians Foundation, Inc. happened to be holding their weekly meeting a few floors up. Nap Perez and Marcus graced our little party, and gamely showed us with a few tricks with Dr. Sharon Ga as a willing volunteer.

Now, it’s a whole new decade, and the club is about to start fresh at a new venue for its monthly meetings. We would like to thank all the photographers, models, make-up artists, judges, sponsors, and other individuals who made 2010 a huge success for the club. We look forward to your continued support in the coming years. This year is sure to be filled with even more fun and exciting new challenges for SPPP.

The Society of Portrait Photographers of the Philippines (SPPP) has held several successful installments of their Photo Mentor Series, in various locations. Held last July 16, 2010 at the Philippine Columbian Association in Paco, Manila, the much awaited Sensual Pictorial and Nude Body Painting photo shoot was the ninth in the series. The venue was packed with club officers, regular and probationary members alike, as well as other guest shutterbugs.

Aside from having skilled photographers, the club also boasts of various other talents. Dentist and make-up artist Marrissa Buenaventura enhanced the models' beautiful faces, while Art professor Ana Knicolai created exquisite designs on their alluring figures. By the time the participants were finished with their scrumptious dinner and the event formally started, Marissa and Ana have transformed into photographers, ready to take pictures of their masterpieces.

After a few introductory words by club president Orly Mercado, adviser Boy Samson gave a brief talk and imparted some tips about Bodyscape and Nude Photography. The participants were then divided into 3 groups, to facilitate a more orderly photoshoot. The room was filled with anticipation, and professional models Cay Mercurio, Sherylyn Gasoc, and Katrine Centeno did not disappoint. The photo shoot was made even more exciting with pythons, courtesy of Mark Chua, sharing the limelight.

The fun didn’t end there, as lots of exciting raffle prizes were given away -- 5 albums, 5 photographic umbrellas, 2 photographic backgrounds, an energy stone, and 5 i-mag photography magazines. SPPP thanks their sponsors Albums & Co., Abacus Microcomputers, Inc., Raymund Marcelo, Boy Samson, and of course, i-mag photography. It was indeed an eventful night that even gained the club some new probationary members. All photography enthusiasts are invited to watch out for the next installment in SPPP's thrilling Photo Mentor Series.

Weddings, Fashion, and Glamour (SPPP's July Meeting)

It was another monthly meeting for the Society of Portrait Photographers of the Philippines last Monday, July 5, 2010. This month featured a lecture on Wedding Photography by hotshot Richel Mascariñas. This attracted more people to the club’s usual venue, the Philippine Columbian Association, like mold to your lens on a rainy day. We were given an additional treat as well, with former member, serious hobbyist photographer, and famous musical genius Jesse Lasaten gracing the occasion. Needless to say, the Lasaten-penned SPPP theme song was sung during the meeting.

But Richel’s and Jesse’s roles didn’t end there. Together with Ramon Ching, they served as judges and critiques for the monthly photo contest. Congratulations to club president Orly Mercado, Lito Remulla, and Leo Cordova for bagging 3rd, 2nd, and 1st place respectively for “Fashion and Glamour”.

Of course, the meeting wouldn’t be complete without the July birthday celebrants blowing the candles on their cake, and being treated to a very.. ahh… “lively” rendition of the birthday song. Even the first time guests gamely serenaded Jeng Flores, Mark Garcia, and Ed Bañaga.

Special thanks go to guests/observers Clifton Nivera, Roldan Decena, Stan Karl Abainza, Al Abainza, Marcelo Manzano, Jonathan David, and Raymund Marcelo for joining us that night. SPPP also welcomes Joey Tariga, Nancy Lim, Kimberly Poli, and Sonny Kabigting to the group as probationary members.

SPPP Spices Up Graphic/Photo-Video Expo 2010

Three days of techno goodness for visual graphic and photography buffs of all kinds, ages, shapes, and sizes! Made possible by Fiera de Manila, it was the first time that the Graphic Expo was held back-to-back with a Photo/Video Expo at the SMX Convention Center, on June 17-19, 2010. With a little help from the Philippine Center for Creative Imaging (PCCI), the Society of Portrait Photographers of the Philippines (SPPP), led by President Orly Mercado, was there to bring more flavor to this yearly event.

SPPP Adviser Boy Samson played emcee, and facilitated the photo shoot sessions at the club's booth. Photo enthusiasts, armed with DSLRs and point & shoot cameras alike, clicked their shutters to their hearts' content at SPPP's gorgeous models. Jessica, Valerie, and child model Anna were photographer magnets both onstage and at the SPPP booth, while April Villamayor, Cinderella Ocampo, and Abi Guevarra sizzled the stage during nude body painting photo shoots. The beautiful body painting was courtesy of non other than SPPP's own Adviser Emeritus Ibarra Deri, and his daughter Dail. Special thanks go to Bing Budiao for providing us with continuous lights.

Back at the booth, a little on-the-spot photo contest was held, sparking even more action and excitement at the jam-packed venue (not to mention some controversy as one participant got a little too fired up about the competition). But it wasn't just the models and pictorials that attracted attention here. Hobbyists, amateurs, and even professional photographers were drawn by posters advertising SPPP's latest workshop, and of course, the very catchy and informative video about the club being played on a 32-inch LCD screen provided by Handy To. As many were eager to join this prestigious organization, SPPP is indeed looking at even more members and exciting activities in the months ahead.

The new board members will elect among themselves on who will be the president, vice-president, secretary/pro, treasurer, and auditor. Election and planning session is on March 11 to 12 at Puerto Azul. Assembly at Shell Magallanes on March 11 at 6:00 a.m.

Belle Villegas was not able to share her expertise on plug-ins for photoshop due to the absence of the LCD projector from Ferdie Flores. Anyway, Belle will do the sharing on October 5, 2009 meeting. It is good to see Norman Morales all the way from Batangas despite of heavy rains. The group had fun photographing our month of September model Steffie Tamayo. Thank you PJ Villegas and Aperture Trading for the studio lights. We also learned from the constructive criticism of our judges Dail and Baste. Our congratulations to the winners - PJ Villegas placed third, Au Lim and Belle Villegas tied for second place and Au bagged the first place medal. Probee Leo Cordova volunteered as chairman of our christmas party 2009 committee on December 7.

Baluarte Ti Vigan: A Photo Adventure

The air was rife with anticipation as early as 6:00 p.m. on April 3, 2009 at the Partas Bus Station, Aurora Ave., Cubao. The two 49-seater buses reserved for the Society of Portrait Photographers of the Philippines (SPPP) weren't scheduled to depart until 8:00 p.m., but a number of early birds were already there, awaiting the rest of the participants. After more than two hours of eager chatter in the waiting area, the wheels started rolling north towards the heritage city of Vigan. Despite prior strict reminders that departure would be at 8:00 sharp, we left at 8:15, giving some consideration to those who were stuck in heavy traffic. At 8:30 though, SPPP President Boy Samson's phone rang, the voice on the other end of the line belonging to a Marvin Benny Saluta, saying he just arrived at the bus station. Unfortunately, we were already cruising NLEX. The poor guy had to pay extra and get on the next bus to Vigan to catch up. But he still turned out to be lucky (read on and you'll find out why).

We arrived earlier than expected at 4:00 a.m. at the Church of Santa Maria. The huge group of participants were divided into several groups, then we waited for about an hour for some light so we can start shooting. The early morning rays shining on the cathedral and the glorious ruins surrounding it made for excellent photos. Not to mention our beautiful models --- Jana, Charmaine, and Via --- donning stunning gowns by Dita Sandico Ong. The heat of the sun grew more intense as we approached midday, but they maintained their poise and smiled for the cameras despite the sweat trickling down their faces.

It was time to head to Baluarte for some rest and nourishment. Delicious breakfast was served by the friendly staff, then we went to our respective room assignments. After lunch, everyone was all set for the first lecture: Wedding Photography. SPPP PRO Leah Taas and member Orly Mercado shed some light on tried and tested, as well as new techniques in covering a wedding. Meanwhile, our models were being transformed by make-up artists Marrissa Buenaventura and Jeng Flores. Jasmine Tecson, another artist, acted as model this time. Avant Garde was up next, so our artists had fun putting their creative ideas in display, with the models as their canvass. Jasmine was joined by Jana, Marjorie, and Paul, who originally only agreed to entertain the crowd with his guitar playing prowess along with the rest of his band members. He gamely ventured into a different avenue, though, and I'm sure it wasn't too much of a burden being surrounded by the ladies. This lecture was facilitated by guest Dail Deri, who is the daughter of SPPP past president and now adviser, Ibarra Deri.

Night came and after dinner, we were treated to Tanduay mixes while being serenaded by the acoustic band Sidhi members Paul, Miggy, Joel and Guillen. Guest Randy Buenaventura also performed a very unique dance with lights.

Day two's schedule proved to be very hectic. Wasting no time after breakfast, we went right into Child Photography with Dail. Guest child models Ma. Catherine Joy Racho, Jericko Jireh Racho, Helaina Sales, and Maria Ann San Andres brought a refreshing atmosphere to the table. A quick meal, then we were off to the historic streets of Vigan, lined with old houses and buzzing with tourists. Models Jana, Veronica, Marjorie, Irish, Jack, Abi, Jhen, and Pam of Nikon scattered along Calle Crisologo with cameras (even those of passers-by) clicking away all around them. Onlookers were probably wracking their brains, trying to figure out which celebrities these elegant looking women were.

Everyone was pretty spent after strolling around the streets under the intense Ilocos Sur sun, but no one wanted to miss the much awaited Photoshop lecture by I-Mag photography magazine Managing Director Ed Yap and Adobe certified instructor Jun Miranda. People oohed an ahhed during the presentation as Ed showed us how to sharpen images correctly and Jun taught us how to merge various visuals into a single panoramic image. This among several other techniques useful in correcting images or creating other impressive effects.

Though it was already pretty late (I told you this day's schedule was packed), there was still one topic to be discussed. Ibarra, fondly called Deri, tackled the different lighting techniques in Studio Portrait. A portrait taken by Deri was also presented by SPPP to Governor Chavit Singson as a token of appreciation for hosting this event. Plaques were given to the speakers, and certificates to the participants.

Think we're done by this time? Well think again. With lots of prizes to be given away in the raffle draw, no one wanted to retire to their rooms just yet. Everybody was a winner as they took home calendars, planners, pens, notebooks, Tanduay gift packs, photo albums, a tripod, a Power Stone, an external memory drive, a quality point and shoot digital camera, and Mac notebook carrying cases (Marvin was one of the lucky winners of a Mac case. Remember our late comer?). We wrapped the night up with more music from Sidhi, and this time a fire dance by Randy Buenaventura.

It was past midnight when the participants went to bed, but they did their best to get up early the next day. It was time to go to the beach! Everyone donned their beach attires and headed to the Sinait Beach Resort. The view was breathtaking. The ocean went from a light turquoise to a deeper shade of blue that blended perfectly with the morning sky. And with the white sand, we didn't even need reflectors. The models showed off their curves, this time in their colorful swim wear. The heat was fierce (I wasn't kidding about the sand being a reflector) and we all envied the models who happily splashed around in their swimsuits. Too soon, though, it was time to leave this beautiful haven, and there wasn't any time to put our cameras away and join them. Let's save that for another journey, shall we?

And what better place to have fun and enjoy the sights at the same time than in Baluarte, the wildlife sanctuary of Governor Chavit Singson in Vigan, Ilocos Sur!

The Society of Portrait Photographers of the Philippines (SPPP) is holding its eighth Mentor Series (“Baluarte Ti Vigan”) in Baluarte on April 3 to 6, 2009, with lead instructors Ibarra Deri and Jun Miranda.

SPPP president Boy Samson said all the ingredients for a photo shoot are here: scenic landscape, natural wonders such as waterfalls, sandy beaches, and forests. Contrasting but mingling harmoniously with the natural views are the historic Spanish churches and rural architecture, watchtowers, and museums.

Here are some guidelines...

1. The applicant must be willing to attend all SPPP regular meetings and participate in all SPPP activities during their probationary period. Failure to attend a meeting or activity without prior notice or valid reason will entail penalty.

2. Applicant must shoot portraits of three (3) regular members (studio set-up) and submit 11x14 prints for critic.

3. As a gesture of brotherhood and camaraderie, applicants must shake the hands of all members and co-applicants.

4. As with all of us who have passed through the probee status, applicants are requested to assist the members (set-up contest photos, assist contest committee, studio set-up, etc.) If you think help is needed, please volunteer... don't just sit down and feel like a guest in the club. I was once a probee. I went through all of these. Believe me, they were a lot strict then than we are now.

5. Know all the members.

6. Please don't be late during meetings unless you have a very valid excuse... traffic is not an excuse because we all know that traffic in Manila is part of life. Maybe you have observed that our senior members come in on time, please don't let them wait for you guys. That's so bad!

The Society of Portrait Photographers of the Philippines recently conducted a two-day workshop on outdoor glamour portrait at the Lopez farm in Naic, Cavite.

These photos of Jazmin Tecson, our model/makeup artist/photographer friend, were shot with my Canon G9... truly a very reliable point & shoot camera.

Lest I forget again, here is the update on our meeting last night...

The contest theme is Open (anything goes as long as there are humans in the photo)... Our judges are the members of the Saturday Club...Buddy Convocar, Nick Masangkay, Mario Panis and Abe Lucas.

The winners are:

1st place: Robert Lester Aliscad

2nd place: Lito Genilo

3rd place: Mitch Derecho (do I hear some violent reactions Mr Edwin Maximo? Hehehe!)

Let me add that we're so proud that new members Edwin Maximo, Louise Casal, Joseph Tutanes and my classmate and good friend, Arnel Rigor made it to the Top 5.

It's never too late to win... a surprise grand slam will yield 6points and we still have 3 more contests to go... so at this point, it's still anybody's ballgame.

Back to last night, we had a nude model but to the dismay of the lady photographers (mine mostly...), we had another female nude model. I thought we agreed that it's about time to change our viewpoint and work on the male species this time... Oh well, guys rule... but wait until we ladies rule... hehehe!!! (To think that Jessie Herrera and Joseph Tutanes were so ready to shed off their clothes... next time guys!!!)

While we did the photo shoot, the members of the Saturday Club did their thing with their charcoals and pastels. The result of the 30-minute session was amazing. After the session, they taught us how to do basic sketching... I tell you, basic is not the right word. I had a difficult time figuring the right measurements of the nude model... I had one sketch with a very long torso which made her look like a creature from outer space, another sketch with the right mesurements but with bulky arms which will rival that of a sumo wrestler. Practice...practice...practice!!!

Next month's contest theme is Black&White (it's like an open contest except that it's in b/w). For the benefit of the new members, entry size: 8x10 or 10x8 (with or without border) and maximum number of entries is 3 per member.

We'll definitely have an update on the Boracay mentor series during the September meeting.

SPPP July 2007 Meeting

I know... I know... This is rather late... sorry guys!!!

We had our meeting last 03 July 2007. Our contest theme for July is "all about weddings". The judges were:

1. Rudy Fontanilla - soon-to-be an in-house judge of SPPP... he never say no to us! (Hehehe!)

2. Angie de Silva - another favorite judge of SPPP but don't take his comments personally... those are all constructive criticisms.

3. Buddy Convocar - president of Saturday Club (a group of very talented artists, which I hope to join someday... wishful thinking!!!)

The winners are or is...

ROBERT LESTER ALISCAD (grand slam winner...let me add that he is the 3rd member who got this honor after Ibarra Deri and Leah Taas...this is really special...it's like a hole-in-one for golfers.)

Our August meeting will be something to look forward to... we'll have a nude photo session with a male model. (yes, finally a male nude model... I hope we get somebody from the 300 cast. Hehehe!)

After the photo session, we'll have a drawing workshop with the group of Mr. Buddy Convocar. So aside from your camera, please bring the following: sketchpad, charcoal pencil #6, eraser.

And don't forget your entries for August... theme: open.

Wait, if our male nude model is not available, our in-house models, Jessie Herrera and Joseph Tutanes are always ready to pose for us (in the spirit of brotherhood and camaraderie... Hehehe!!!)

SPPP was invited to cover a fashion show @ Metro Bar last week. The show's director, Eyzenne or is it Aizenne (I don't know how to spell his name right...really too complicated direk!) is a good friend of the club and a regular source of models for our shoots.

June 2007 Meeting

June 04, 2007: SPPP June meeting

No major agenda for this meeting because SPPP was tasked to shoot a fashion show at the Metro Bar in West Avenue, QC... so after the contests judging and announcement of winners, we headed to the show's venue.

Contest themes for June: Open & Bodyscape

The judges were Mr. Chito Madrono and Mr. Ibarra Deri.

As always, there were a lot of entries for the Open category. For the benefit of the other members who are "consistently absent" (pardon the words!!!), Open category is always the theme every two months therefore the next Open will be during the August meeting.

For the Open category, here are the winners:

HOW TO APPLY FOR MEMBERSHIP TO SPPP

Applicants aspiring for membership to the SOCIETY OF PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHERS OF THE PHILIPPINES must agree to the following requirements:

The applicant must be willing to be interviewed by the Club Secretary, or Chairman of the Committee on Membership, or any SPPP officer duly designated by the SPPP president, to determine the his/her extent of photography background, interest in photography, and present skill level as a photographer.
From the results of the interview or background check, the applicant will be categorized as hobbyist, advanced hobbyist, semi-professional, or professional photographer.

The applicant must be willing to attend all SPPP regular and special meetings and participate in all activities during a one year probationary period as a test of his/her interest to join the organization. Failing to attend a single meeting and/or activity without prior notice, valid reason, or securing an excuse from the SPPP president or secretary will lead to the disqualification of his/her application for membership to SPPP.

On the probationary period, the applicant must shoot portraits of at least three regular SPPP members in a studio set up, and submit 11’ x 14” color or black-&-white prints before the IMC membership for critic. After the one year probationary period, and meeting all the requirements for SPPP membership, all the officers and regular members of SPPP will decide on accepting or declining the applicant’s membership.

It was a great and really awesome experience... though I didn't get to explore my adventurous side in the outdoor challenges (let's leave that to the younger generation.)... besides I have tons of work to do with Sir Gari in the Secretariat and I only brought slippers and somebody has to watch over the cameras and other equipment. Hehehe!

Ok... enough with the excuses... here are some "behind the scenes" shots from the Xtreme Tanay mentor series...

April Meeting

SPPP regularly meets every 1st Monday of the month so last Monday was our April meeting. Since April is the birth month of Sir Deri, Sir Gari, Alex Ares and myself, we prepared a sumptuous buffet dinner for our members and guests.

The contest theme for the month is Open so we can submit any photo as long as it's about people. As a rule, no entry...pay penalty. We had as judges Bern Mejias (WPPP President), Carlo Zamora (a really very serious hobbyist and award-winning photographer) and Rudy Fontanilla (a seasoned portrait photographer with a fashion statement... Mr. White! Hehehe!)

3rd: Edwin Maximo (this guy never fails to win every month. hmmm...watch out for him)

4th: Leah Taas (whew!!! that was close... thought I lost my touch already.)

We also had a shoot with our guest model, Daniella Sevilla, a 16-year old Fil-Am girl who's really very pretty and truly energetic. The shoot lasted until 2am and she was still so perky but sadly though, the photographers (who are mostly in their senior years were sighing and secretly complaining that it was past their bedtime. Hahaha!)

Andy Samaniego posted some of his shots of Daniella in his blog. Check them out. He even gave a very inspiring intro about Adobe Lightroom.

SPPP PHOTO MENTOR SERIES 4

here's the complete details :

The Society of Portrait Photographers of the Philippines (SPPP) would be having once again it’s fourth Mentor Series this April 20 to 22, 2007, entitled “Xtreme Tanay (An Outdoor Photo Adventure)”.

Just like the first three seminars that were held outside of Manila (Palawan, Bicol, and Baguio), this year’s Mentor Series will be held at the Sacramento Valley Resort / Camp in Tanay, Rizal.

We shall be holding seminars on Light Painting and Fashion Photography, Wedding Photography, Portrait Photography & Corrective Lighting, Directing Models, Audio Visual Presentation Trends, and Bodyscape. Each seminar will be led by members that are in the forefront of their craft in the industry.

We are inviting numerous hobbyists and professionals from all over the country to take part in this event.

We would want to invite you to join and make the most of this three day / five topic event for only P5,000.00 (inclusive of seminar fee, accommodations and food). Transportation shall also be provided from the SPPP Office at 115 West Ave. to Sacramento Valley Resort / Camp in Tanay Rizal.

For those in the photography business, this could also serve as good training to several of your personnel.

It offers nature challenges, portrait and wedding shoot with models, lectures on wedding, portrait and fashion photography, corrective lighting, directing models, audiovisual trends, light painting and WOW . . . outdoor BODYSCAPE. Unlike the past SPPP mentor series that we had in Palawan, Bicol and Baguio, XTREME TANAY is the next level photo workshop participants would want to attend. wow... i just realized i was just 15 when the first sppp mentor series took place. it really just felt like a bunch of people enjoying palawan, instead of a very stiff class... yet you go back to manila not realizing how much knowledge in photography (and mingling and drinking and for some maybe falling in love?) you've gained . the organizers as well as the participants just had their way of keeping the atmosphere of the event light and fun, yet very informative. i'm 26 now, and i'm pretty sure this mentor series will be just as fun, probably even better. for me, the sppp mentor series is more of a venue where photography lovers can spend time with the artist in them, a time when they could simply just indulge in their passion. so see you all there!!! can't wait!!! :)

The Mentors...

Let's start with the master... Mr Ibarra Deri... he'll be lecturing on portrait and fashion photography. Sir Deri is currently the President of SPPP. He had been unselfishly sharing his expertise in portraiture for the longest time. (He was my first teacher, remember?) He holds regular classes at the Philippine Center for Creative Imaging.

And the master's unica hija... Ms Dail Deri... she'll take charge of creative lighting techniques. Sobra galing this lady, promise!!! And very pretty too!!! I assure you... you will be amazed by this father-daughter tandem.

My very good friends Andy Samaniego and Robert Lester Aliscad will talk on wedding photography.

Ms Jasmine Tecson, a photographer and a model too, will give tips on how to pose a model.(believe me...sometimes guys end up stammering when faced with a very gorgeous model so this lecture is really important especially for the male species. hahaha!)

The next mentor, Mr.Jessie Lasaten, will be in charge of audio-visual trends. His company Cutting Edge Productions is one of the most in-demand production outfits for corporate accounts. Need I say that when you google his name, grabe the number of pages that will appear. (google him and you'll know more about my kumpare!!!)

I don't want to talk about the mentors for the Outdoor Bodyscape anymore... just three words... They are fabulous! (and probably, two more words... very beautiful!) Hey, I'm not talking about the models yet... just the mentors. Hahaha!

The fee for the mentor series is P5T. That's a good deal in exchange for the fun and learning experiences, food and lodging, free shuttle service (if you don't want to bring your car) and outdoor model shoots which you can use for your portfolio.

What to bring?
- personal essentials
- comfy footwear for the jungle adventure
- swimwear (there's a big pool inside the camp)
- sunblock (all the shoots are outdoor)
- and your CAMERA (whew, almost forgot this!!!)
